As part of a multimillion-dollar apartment building upgrade in central Auckland, Amediate Engineering was approached with a unique challenge: create a statement letterbox that bridged the past and future of the site—something that would stand out, yet feel right at home.

The client’s brief was simple in intent, but complex in execution:

“We want something that reflects the building’s heritage while matching the sleek, modern redevelopment. Something that says quality, permanence, and design integrity.”

Our solution?
A custom-built letterbox using a blend of polished stainless steel and corten steel—a material combination that elegantly balances industrial strength with architectural warmth.

Corten’s natural weathering complements the original brick and plasterwork of the heritage façade, while the stainless elements provide a polished contrast that ties in with the building’s new steel-and-glass features. The design requirements were discussed among the team at Amediate and a proposal put to the client about the options - “they were delighted”.

But this wasn’t just about looks.

We worked closely with the project’s architects and site manager to ensure the unit met practical requirements too: secure lockable compartments, integrated lighting provisions, concealed fixings, and long-term durability in an exposed environment.
